This week I came across a post from a friend who shared a quote that I happened to need that day… “We aren’t always dealt the hand we want or the hand we think we deserve in life, but we can make the best of the cards in our hands.” I’ve been spending more time than I should feeling bummed about moving to another state away from family and friends. It has been hard and lonely, but mostly just different – which my personality doesn’t like much. After reading that quote I once again realized that my family has a “card” that some other families have tried and hoped for but have never been lucky enough to get dealt. Even though this “card” has things I don’t like about it, it is a wonderful opportunity and something that will allow my husband to provide a good life for our family. This “card” is something that will bring challenges but so many wonderful things as well.
If you are like me, you have always had in mind your perfect “hand”. And at every major event in life as the dealer comes around again you hope for the best to be sent your way. No matter how carefully we play our cards, sometimes things don’t work out how we think they should. And as you look around, you will always be able to find other people who seem to have been dealt what you have always hoped for in life. Whether it be the perfect job, house, education, kids, spouse, health, dog… whatever! But just as I needed this reminder myself, I want to share it with you. “The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives… – Russel M. Nelson”
So with that, here is my renewed goal to stop myself before criticizing my “cards” and instead take a moment to acknowledge all of the great things I have been dealt. No matter how different they are from what I thought my “perfect hand” would be. All of us have different challenges, opportunities, and circumstances that we have been dealt – and it is up to us to choose to be happy and make the best of them!
P.S. With a little help from Google, I found the article the original quote came from. It’s awesome, so go take a gander: https://ldschurch.uberflip.com/i/771495-2017-february-ensign/21?m4=
