Hello! Shanae here, sister #2 coming at cha. I get the opportunity to speak to my ward’s relief society about family finances tonight and I am so excited! Seriously… I could talk about money every day, all day if someone would just listen. The hubs gets a case of the “uh huh’s” when I get going, but I just love it. I haven’t always however. In fact, I used to be pretty complacent about money. If I had any Benjamins, great, if I didn’t, dang. Gotta wait until pay day. Fast forward a few years into marriage, and a couple **cough** LOADS of stupid money moments later and now I can proudly say that I am a freaking BOSS when it comes to managing my family’s finances. What changed? Well, we were thrown into financial disaster. We lost a few jobs, had a few unexpected medical bills and I was forced to get my act together or spend the rest of our lives living literally, with just cents in our checking account, let alone a savings account. That year, 2014 to be exact definitely wasn’t my favorite, but I wouldn’t change it for anything because now I know how to handle money instead of letting it work me over like a crazy bandit broken out of jail and needs my car for a quick get away.
I know that many people feel like money manages them. I realize that money is a root for contention in sooooo many relationships. I recently saw a study released by the American Psychological Association that said 3/4th of Americans are experiencing financial stress, while 1 in 4 Americans are experiencing extreme financial stress. HOLY MOLY!!!! 1 in 4!?!?!?! Ugh… makes my heart hurt for all of you because I have totally been there. I will never forget one night early on in my marriage the hubs said to me, “Wow. I can see why so many marriages fail due to money! This is so stressful!” We had been duking it out that evening over money to the point where we were attacking each other individually and heavens knows how fun that is… not. Not fun at all actually. But we still didn’t change our habits until years later when I finally picked up a book we got as a wedding gift… Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. Three words: Read it people. That book was a gift straight from heaven at the perfect time and place (like all of God’s blessings) and we changed our ways and have never looked back.
I know money and family finances are such taboo subjects, but I really want to help people get their pennies in place so that they can relieve hopefully ALL of their financial burden. What is your biggest struggle? Bills? Groceries? Credit card debt? Savings? Trying to afford family vacations? Please let me know so I can help! I want to help! Like I said, I’m that annoying money nut that you just love to have at your girls night out, or family reunion… (face palm). Thanks everyone! You Rock! If you don’t want to comment directly, send me a pm just so I have an idea what the masses would like. Then after the big sha-bang tonight, I’ll update some awesome tips that we talked about just in case you’re dying to know.
